Mui Miu Knockoff

I love Miu Miu detachable collars. I have always wanted one SO MUCH, because not only are they beautiful themselves, but they can add so much to an outfit. Mostly because they’re just beautiful though. When I see something pretty I have to admit I don’t come up with a meaningful description of my feelings in my head or put together an outfit or something, I just stand there going “peeeerrrdddyyy” and do something with it later. So for a long time I didn’t do anything to satisfy my detachable collar craving, even though it would be super easy to do so. It’s so simple you could probably figure it out, but I’ll teach you anyway because I like to feel smart, mmkay?

First 2 pictures randomly off the first page of Google Images and the last one from Tumblr.

HOW TO MAKE A “MIU MIU COLLAR”. IT’S IN QUOTATION MARKS BECAUSE IT’S NOT REAL.

1. Find a shirt and cut the collar off obviously. It can be any collared shirt, but mens’ are better because usually they are sturdier and bigger, which is good for a detachable collar. Try the shirt on first and make sure you like the way the collar fits before you start. Then cut around the bottom of the collar, or better yet, get one of those un-stitching-tool-thingies and just break the thread holding the collar to the rest of the shirt. Depending on the type of shirt, you might need to hem it, but mine looked fine so I just cut it and left it like that.

When you’ve cut it, it should look like this:

2. Now you’re going to paint a design on your collar. Yeah. I went there. Put your collar on to see which side faces out, and then paint whatever you want on it. Doing it freehand is kind of risky, so I used a home-made stencil for my first time. Cut out the silhouette of the design you’re going to paint on, and then simply put it onto the collar and paint over it with fabric paint. Easy peasy. But if I were you, I’d do it on a piece of paper first to make sure it comes out the way you want it to. Then just paint the details over it.

3. Let it dry. Then you can customize it even more. Maybe add some lace to the edge, add another (or the same) design to the other side of the collar, or replace the button. I went to a yard sale today and bought some awesome stuff, including a baby sweater with two cute elephant buttons. I cut one of the buttons off and replaced the one on the collar with the elephant one to customize it even more. This collar is now mine completely! I love it and I can wear it with any shirt!

Aaand, here’s my ‘Miu Miu’ collar with my favorite Wilco shirt! Yay! Fun fun fun fun, I’m ready to go partying-partying (yeah).

Oh, and what I wore today:

I think my new sparkly bow needs its own close-up.

Dress (worn as top): Stella McCartney. Skirt: Orla Keily hand-me-downed. Shoes: Mom’s gladiators. Thrifted mini-bow pin.

Brace for a boring post about stuff I made for no reason. Unrelated to fashion.

I have 12 days left of school! And 2 days after that, I move. Forever. I can’t wait to go to Providence but I know I’ll still miss the people here. I want summer to come sooooon but also not at all.

Also, last night I made a bunny out of an old sweater and named it Tylenol because I’m awesome like that. Here he issss.

Isn’t he peerrrdy? I know this has nothing to do with fashion, but who says this is a fashion blog? Me? Phht, that means nothing. Ignore me, nothing I say makes sense anyway. :)

Ba-doom chah.

I decided I haven’t been very crafty recently, so I checked out the blog of the DIY-goddess Marlena (Self-Constructed-Freak) and I saw she made a Carebear purse/backpack. I have EXACTLY THE SAME CAREBEAR. I was tempted to do the same thing, but there is NO WAY I’m killing Love-A-Lot-Bear. Yes, that’s her name. Awkwardness aside. Back to the point, I went to my basement and murdered a fluffy white plush toy that I’m 99% sure was a bear, but I was getting some serious dog vibes after a while. Whatever. Here’s my new S-C-F inspired purse. I’m not so great at sewing (I just love to do it anyway :3 ) so I’ll only show the good side, and I probably won’t bring it to school/zone of destruction of all objects. The first picture is the whole thing, and the second is the back, where you put stuff into. I’m posing and putting my glasses into it, like I’m in a stock image.

Dontcha just looove my Stella McCartney zebra top? I have no idea how I got it, I probably either accidentally stole it from my mom or a friend. I don’t recall buying anything from Stella McCartney (not that I never wanted to!) I kinda feel like a cheater when I don’t source everything I wear in the pictures I take, so the leggings are from Cotton On (HK).

And here is something I drew a loonog time ago that I kept and still kind of like. My drawing skills aren’t the best, as you may know, but I’m rather proud of it. DUNCOPPYIT

You can probably click it to see all my secret colorful detail.               …that was sarcasm, there is no secret detail.

I have some more news. This will be a longish post, I’m afraid. Here’s the latest 411. :D

1. I have VOWED to myself to stop biting my nails.

After seeing Ergy-Erg’s post here, I noticed how pretty her hands were. I looked at mine and saw short, jagged nails, swollen red skin around my fingertips, and bloody cuticles. Ew. I have tried nail polish, snapping a rubber band on my arm whenever I caught myself, and even putting tape around all my fingers. Nothing worked so now I’m going for sheer willpower. And sleeping with socks on my hands so I can’t do it at night. Day one was a success.

2. I got new make-up.

Sorry. This is super cliche-girly, but I’m so excited! I can now draw on my face with 5 new colors of eyeliner and I got some quality bright red lipstick (before I was using some I got at CVS for $.99). Not that I wear it often, but still.  I have the urge to say ‘rawr’ right now, but that’s irrelevant and stupid so I won’t. Here’s me modeling some new eyeshadow and eyeliner. The eyeshadow is sparkly purple so I’ll probably never wear it- I never wear eyeshadow as is anyway- but it’s still cool. Maybe for halloween? I used all my eyeliners to draw on my hand. My favorites are the silver and lavender.

It looks like I have a black eye. Note to self: never put eyeshadow under your eye, especially purple, or you’ll look like you were in a fight.

Oh, wow. I can’t think of anymore news, even though I felt like there would be a lot. Oh wel,, hee hee…

I’ll probably think of it later and put it in a new irrelevant post.

Blog Stats

Hello! Today I’m writing my 30th post. Wow, thirty- I doubted I would make it past 1 or 2 before I got lazy and stopped! So, yay me I guess.

I have also achieved my goal of getting 1,000 views total today. Actually, I have had 1,016 so far- yes, I keep track :P- so I’m happy! I never thought anyone would EVER read this except my friends, but I guess I was wrong! My daily record is 78. In honor of my goal being achieved, here’s a bad and slightly creepy painting I made yesterday. Wooot.

Wait. How come I’ve only had about 20 comments EVER, but 1000 views? Someone’s breaking the rules! And Rodney, Dom says to give you this. *hug*

Painting by me. Please don’t use without permission. Drawn with colored pencils and water colors.

Spank! hair and other stuff

I went to an arcade with my little brother today, and on the way back we stopped at a drugstore and I bought these cute little apple barrettes. From a distance I thought they were light pastels and got really excited, and I was all, “OMG I’M GONNA HAVE SPANK! HAIR LALALALALA”, but then I was all, “Oh, I guess I will simply have awesome hair as opposed to super-awesome hair.” So I bought these. They might not be pastel or even remotely Spank-ish like I thought, but I still love them.

When I got home, I looked in my room and found that I got some more awesome hand-me-downs (could you even call them that?) from my mom. She gave me this old Napoleon Dynamite wig she found in the depths of her closet, and a pretty necklace with leaf-thingies on them. Then, rummaging through random boxes and stuff, I found one more necklace, a plain plastic headband with infinite possibilities, and a hat for one of my old dolls, which I will now wear as my own. Too small? Nothing a couple bobby pins can’t solve.

Wow. This picture sucks. Sorry. I had to hold my laptop over my bed to take the picture and I moved but I’m too lazy to redo it.

Goooossshhh. “You look like my mom in 1982.” -dad

Oh, how I love tiny hats.

Ignore the owl pendant, I’m always wearing that. The necklaces mentioned above are the long shiny one and the chunky red/orange one. I love them both, but I wonder if what I wear is “elegant” enough for the leaf necklace, it’s so pretty and dainty. Oh! I almost forgot! I recently discovered Alex Prager, this really awesome photographer. She’s self-taught, and her photos are incredible.

These are my 2 favorite pictures. Bahbabababa, I’m lovin’ it. Especially the last one.

See ya. xx Ruby

Interview with THE FASHION TURD!

 Turd is the word.

Hey people! Guess what? I scored an interview with a fellow fashion blogger who has been blogging a lot longer than I have. You might know here as Holly or The Fashion Turd. It’s this really awesome blog by someone who makes their own jewelry, dresses like “Japanese doll/9-year-old boy” and has bright red dreadlocks. Drrruuummmroollll please. Heeere’s Johnny!

1. Why did you start blogging?
I used to get stopped quite a bit in the street with people asking to take pictures or to comment on what i wore. Most of it was very positive (…i say most, a few calls of ‘freak’ or ‘goth’ from some ultra Jurassic retards), so i thought a blog would be really productive outlet for all the stuff floating in my head which eventually ends up in what i wear. I don’t take it too seriously, my blog is very tongue in cheek and i realize that I come across as a right narcissistic bastard (which i am), but it’s all having a laugh and not taking it too seriously…After all it’s just clothes!
2. Do you admire any brands or designers specifically?
I am a walking spew-up of high street, second hand, and market clothes with a few special pieces which cost more $$$!  In terms of real grown up designers i admire Rei Kawakubo, Alexander Mqueen, Bernhard Willhelm, Zandra Rhodes..i cant really remember anymore..in fact im not that into fashion as a concept and dictating what is ‘hot to wear’ this season (vomit)…i  just like the things that bring a smile to my gloomy face!
3. What music do you like?
mmmmm music…..putting on big earphones and listening to my tunes is complete sanctuary: Bjork, Lamb, Peaches, Hercules and Love Affair, Kap Bambino, Devendra Banhart, Kate Bush, Bob Marley, Daniel Johnston, Belle and Sebastien, Beirut, Kimya Dawson, Moldy Peaches, Joan as Policewoman, Ani Di Franco, Antony and the Johnsons, coco rosie, Nick Drake,  Joanna Newsom…mainly trip hop, folk and anti folk
4. What did you eat so far today?
Oooohh, well im staying with my family at the moment so i get to eat like jabba the hutt for a few days…so here goes..cup of tea, My 10 year old brothers chocolate flavoured cereal, cup of tea, cup of tea, those MSG laden round potato chips that come in a long tube, cup of tea, a parma ham salad, some ‘Hello Panda’ cookies, traditional British roast dinner with pork, apple sauce and all the trimmings, some Japanese jelly candy, cup of tea, some roast potatoes left from dinner..i will probably have another cup of tea before bed too…i don’t conform to many stereotypes but the British Tea drinking cliche is definately a box that i tick
5. How would you describe your style?
My brain wrapped around my body…colourful, ecclectic, spotty, stripey, kitsch, youthful, plasticy, sarcastic, energetic, tactile, tongue-in-cheek, vomit inducing!
6. What are you thinking when you get dressed in the morning/um, whenever? Do things inspire your outfits or do you just create them?
I  just cover myself in glue, walk into my wardrobe and whatever sticks to me i wear!…. not entirely true…i’m certainly inspired by things everyday, but i just put pieces together that i think work and that make me feel like a goddess. The general rule is not to put stuff together that ‘matches’..i like mixing colours, textures and prints to the extreme. I’m also really inspired by Japanese street fashion, the 70’s and 80’s, graphic novels, religous iconography and Pat Butcher.
7. Where do you get most of your clothes? Do you make any of them?
I get my clothes from the high st, charity shops, markets, friends, bins…I customize a lot of stuff but im not a seamstress so dont attempt to make full on garments, i can just about handle a glue gun! But i do make my own jewellery, the line is called House of Turd and is available to buy here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheFashionTurd?ref=pr_shop_more  …shameless plug..sorry!
8. Who is your favorite person who ever lived?
Ooohh, all of my real favourite people are still alive…gorgeous family and delicious friends…and my truly incredible Mrs who inspires me more than she will ever, ever realize. I also have a bit of a Bjork obsession. And Tank Girl is my favourite fictional person.
9. Do you try to stand out with the way you dress, or does it come naturally because you just wear what you like and it happens to be unique?
I just wear what makes me feel bloody brilliant.  Some people ask me if i feel self-conscious at all in what i wear and my answer is a definite ‘no’!; i would feel more self conscious wearing head to toe black or a pair of jeans and a hoodie because that would just not be me. Maybe my style will change over time, but hopefully i will always want to dress like a japanese doll/9 year old boy!
10. What is your favorite article of clothing?
ooooooooh. Ruby, what a toughy…ooooohhh….my polka dot Dr Martens.
You should really check out her blog! It’s here, at www.thefashionturd.com . I love it. Just be sure to wear your sunglasses before you try to look at her clothes! But once you do, they’re awesome! By the way… those Docs she was referring to? I have the same ones, but black with white instead of vice versa! Yes, I have verified fashion sense! I hope you check out her blog and actually COMMENT. Please.

Dotty legs

Today was one of the two days a week I can wear skirts (I have gym class on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday! Being such a wimp, it is awful in more than one way) so I took advantage and wore my Vietnamese tribal skirt, which my friend says looks like a rug. Oooohhh yeeeaaah, rug skirts FTW. I also wore my new voodoo doll brooch and Alexander McQueen ring that I made yesterday. Best. Outfit. Ever. In a long time.

I tried wearing black face paint as lipstick this morning, but I took it off at school when people kept letting me know the purple candy I had eaten was on my lips. Gah, some people just don’t get it! I need some REAL black lipstick. Maybe pastel green.

Here’s what I wore today.

This face is for everyone who wonders why I don’t usually smile in my pictures.

Shirt: Cotton On (HK). Vietnamese tribal skirt. Bag: Alexander McQueen. Brooch and ring: self-made. Legwarmers: Chinese street markets. Shoes: Doc Martens. Oh, and here are a few pictures I took after school.

Glittery evil ice queen

Alexander McQueen (RIP) ‘s autumn/winter 2011 show was breathtaking. I was gasping and staring as I watched the video on the AMQ website. I needed one of those white dresses. It was art, really art, and I NEEDED to be a part of the magic. But I couldn’t be, could I? So, I compromised  and made an Alexander McQueen ring based on these outfits.

Here’s my ring. Ohma gawd, it looks so ugly after posting the real dresses.

AH! MY COMPUTER  pictures are so blurry!!! Just imagine fake white fur with silvery glitter and a dark metal bead with a flower design on it.

EDIT: It’s kind of pathetic to do 3 blog posts in one day, no? So I’m putting my final post of the day as a “PS” to this one. I made my dog a headscarf which is not worth of its own post anyway. Here it is!

Pretty in pink (and yellow and blue)

(pictures from Self-Constructed Freak, Spank!, style.com and the movie Edward Scissorhands. I based my outfit mostly around the last picture, that movie has always been idea-triggering to me and it was my main inspiration today. That, and that I found my mom’s old holey sweater that she said I could have, and I was overjoyed at it’s yellow-ness and I based my outfit around that! Oh, and today was the least grey-looking day in a long time, so I took some pictures outside in front of bushes and stuff to make it look all lush and green. Is it working??!

(my dog Iggy came to say hi)

Sweater: hand-me-downed from my mom. shirt: Urumtees. Jeans: um, Old Navy or Gap maybe?? Voodoo doll brooch: (you may recall that in my last post it was a necklace, but I transformed it for the sake of this outfit) Necklaces: self-made, gift, and unknown. (That was helpful.) Cat ear barrettes: a drugstore or something. Rings: from childhood, self-made. Bag: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN! I LOVE YOU MOM!

I hardly ever wear any jeans except for my mom’s old boyfreiend rolled-up jeans, but I needed light ones for my outfit and I had gym class today so I couldn’t wear a skirt. They are skinny jeans AND they have tears in them, which I hate!!! Tear tear! I don’t like having gym 3 times a week, it ruins my wardrobe selection!

I love Spank, by the way. In case I haven’t told you yet. It makes me want to move to Japan and live among the pretty plastic  barrettes and pastel unicorn-hair-woven dresses. BUT DON’T GO THERE OR YOU’LL BE EATEN  BY A GLITTERY NINETIES FAIRY AND HER PINK ELF PONY

I was sew busy!

Aren’t I punny?

I’ve been SO busy with schoolwork this weekend, I forgot about my lovely blog! Well, that is, until I looked upon my mini sewing kit and remembered. I also remembered that I had work to do with that sewing kit. I needed to do two things:

  • fix my broken owl backpack (the straps came off, the flap to close the bag came off, and one of the feet is pretty much dead)
  • make a fourteenth birthday present for my friend Chloe

I started with the first one, and I couldn’t get it back into backpack form. It was sew sad! (Okay, I’ll stop, I promise) But I COULD sew the straps together and make it a normal purse, and I could easily sew the flap back on by hand. I NEED a sewing machine though, I have some really awesome skirt designs that I can’t make by hand! Plus, all the fabric I have to work with here are old pajamas my mom won’t notice if they go missing. Blargh. At least I’m moving in 27 days. (I’ll still miss my friends terribly, obviously! But really. I need to go to Target.)

Here’s a picture of the mostly finished improved owl bag. i wish i had a before picture, I suck at remembering to take those.  just picture it in backpack form. oh, and i forgot to fix the foot. : (

It’s my favorite bag!!!You can’t see what’s wrong with the foot so I did a close-up.

It’s teh left foot. Just letting you know in case Captain Obvious forgets to show up.

Oh! And here’s Chloe’s present. (DON’T LOOK, CHLOE) (SPOILER, CHLOE, DON’T READ ON) (I MEAN IT, CHLOE!) It’s a cube. A cube of fail. It’s pretty much made with fail in every stitch. Leave me alone, I’m bad at sewing and I’ve never tried a cube before!!!!!!

And this was its best side. One of them is falling apart. It’s made of an old tank top my friend left at my house before she moved away three years ago, my brother’s old waterproof shirt, and PJ pants. So, it’s ugly and totally pointless, but can I get some points for creativity? Eh? Eh?

OH. And one more thing. I made a necklace! At first I was going to make Chloe an awesome voodoo doll, I even made hair out of yarn and stuff (now it’s inside the cube of fail!) but it turned out to be tiny and the limbs were all deformed at weird. So, I sewed it to some ribbon and it is my latest piece of jewelry. I now have a handmade mini voodoo doll necklace! Woot! Can I get a high five? I think I deserve one for this! It’s sooo awesome! I would give this to Chloe instead of that terrible cube with no function or purpose except to sit there and look ugly, but I’m selfish. Just kidding. Sort of. Oh, and did I mention that it has 2 sides? One green and pink, one beige and black. One from old PJs, one from an old headband thing.

Woah. It’s late. I’m going to bed. Goodnight, readers! Goodnight, moon! I fare thee well… I hope we meet again, I do, I do…
